For those of you just joining, I’m trying to knit one pair of socks per month this year so that I can participate in Kristin from the Yarngasm podcast’s Box o Sox knit-a-long. I’ve written about my January – April socks, but I got a little behind in May. I just finished up my May socks towards the end of June, but I was able to get my June socks started and off the needles in a few weeks, so now I’m back on track!

May Socks

I had chosen the Hermione’s Everyday Socks as my pattern for May. It’s such a popular pattern, and it’s free, so I’ve really been wanting to knit it.

I used Skeinny Dipping Cannonball Sock in the Space Pants colorway. I always use a 2 mm needle (US size 0) for knitting my socks, and I do them using magic loop.

These socks are so simple, and the pattern is very quick and easy to memorize, but the texture is so cute! It makes the socks feel squishy and cozy. I would definitely knit these again. I think this yarn was a good choice for this pattern as well – it’s just the right amount of variegated.

June Socks

I kind of wanted to participate in the Clark sock knit-a-long hosted by the Clark socks pattern’s author Jaclyn Salem of the Brooklyn Knitfolk podcast, and the KAL ends July 8th. I think I cast these socks on on June 20th, so I knit them in about 12 days, which is quite fast for me. The pattern is an 8 row repeat, and it’s pretty addicting.

These socks have two cables: a big braid down the front, and a smaller twist down the back. If I knit these again, I would definitely switch the back cable to be twisted the other way, because I think cables are easier to work holding the stitches in the front instead of in the back, and I don’t think the effect would be any different. I cable without a cable needle, and I just personally find it easier on my hands to work front cables than back cables. I’d be tempted to try switching all of the cables in the front braid as well, but I’d definitely want to check to make sure it’s as nice looking. Other than that, I really liked the pattern! I did a fish lips kiss heel instead of the short row heel in the pattern.

The yarn I used is by Fig & Posy Fiber Co, and it’s their super sport base in the colorway Harbor. I still used 2 mm needles, and the fabric is a bit denser than when I knit socks with fingering weight yarn, but it’s not too different. I really loved knitting with this yarn because of all of the speckles, especially the occasional little tiny red speckles.

Future Socks

One small sock issue I’m having is that every single pair of socks I’ve knit this year is either blue or includes blue tones. Blue is not usually one of my favorite colors – I prefer greens and reds. I’m not sure what’s been going on in my life that I’ve been choosing so much blue sock yarn, but I think I should probably not knit any more blue socks this year so that I actually want to wear my socks in the future.

I just cast on my July socks yesterday. I had this self striping Christmas yarn by The Yarn Jar (called Vintage Christmas) that I’ve been wanting to use, so I decided that Christmas in July socks were appropriate. It’s actually the first skein of self striping sock yarn that I’ve ever knit socks with, and I’m liking it so far. It also has no blue in it, which makes me happy. I’m just knitting plain vanilla socks, so I’m thinking I’ll be ready for some more patterned socks next – any suggestions?
