Seattle Triangle Cowl

I had only one skein of a Peruvian alpaca yarn (Sol Alpaca Baby Alpaca) in a gorgeous green color that my boyfriend bought for me when he was traveling in South American, and I was not sure what to do with it. I thought about a cowl, but I’m not a huge fan of traditional cowls – I feel like they’re kind of suffocating. I do love triangle scarves, however, so I came up with a simple triangle cowl pattern, and I love it! You can find the pattern below or here as a pdf.

I like to gather the cowl at the top with a shawl pin. I found this particular pin at a shop called Momo in Seattle’s International District. I love how simple it is.

Anyway, here’s the pattern! (PDF here)

Seattle Triangle Cowl

Size US 10 ( mm) needles (straight or circular)
Tapestry needle

Gauge
9 stitches and 14 rows = 4” (10 cm) in garter stitch on US 10 needles
(Gauge is not extremely important for this project)

Abbreviations

K: knit
KFB: Knit in the front and back of stitch.

Notes
This cowl is knitted flat, folded, and sewn together up the back. It has a lot of room for flexibility depending on the type of yarn you’re using and the size of piece you want. I’ve given measurements for the garment I actually made, but I think that it could definitely be longer, wider, or have a neck that goes up higher. A fringe would also be cool. Be creative! I like wearing mine gathered with a simple metal shawl pin.

Pattern
CO 3. Turn.
Row 1: K3. Turn.
Row 2: KFB, K until there is only 1 stitch remaining, KFB.
Row 3: K across.
Rows 4-43: Repeat rows 2 and 3 22 times (49 stitches).
Rows 44-54: Repeat row 3 10 times.
Bind off.

Finish
Lay the garment flat and fold the two upper ends in such that they meet in the center. Sew the two flat edges together.
Weave in ends.
